Kelly is the founder and principal of MACGREGOR LAW, a boutique law firm specializing in corporate and commercial law, with an emphasis on food and beverage law, marketing, sales and operations.
Before founding his firm, Kelly worked as Senior Legal Counsel with Kraft Canada Inc. for 26 years, where he gained extensive experience in all aspects of food and beverage law, including packaging and labelling, marketing and advertising, sales and competition law, operations, supply chain, environmental compliance, international trade and trade policy. Kelly was also the Director of Government and Industry Affairs.
He is a graduate of the University of Manitoba, the University of Windsor and Osgoode Hall Law School at York University.
Since 1980, Tim Lowman has appeared as counsel in a broad range of commercial and intellectual property litigation including patent, trade-mark, copyright, professional errors and omissions, trade secrets, invention ownership, product liability and employment law claims in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench, Federal Court of Canada, Ontario Court of Appeal, Federal Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Canada.
Since 2005, he has also carried on an Arbitration practice in domestic and international commercial cases, appearing as counsel and as an independent Arbitrator, in matters involving commercial agreements, including technology licenses, in the food and beverage, entertainment, energy and mining, and life sciences sectors.
Linda Smith is the President of Smithcom and has worked in public relations in Canada for the last 30 years consulting to many of Canada’s best-known companies. In 2010, she founded Smithcom, a leading reputation management firm, to provide personalized services to clients with business issues and opportunities.
Her early career was with Broadcast News/Canadian Press in Toronto covering provincial and national affairs. Linda then moved to Hill and Knowlton in its early years in Canada where she worked for 11 years, creating and managing both the Canadian Health Care and Consumer Practices.
Linda then founded the Canadian operations of Fleishman-Hillard and for 17 years grew the highest-ranked global public relations firm from a start-up to more than 200 consultants. Linda also sat on the Global Executive Committee of the U.S.-based firm.
Linda has extensive expertise in corporate affairs, issues management and crisis communications. She has worked for Maple Leaf Foods as an external consultant for 25 years and was a key communications advisor and spokesperson during the listeriosis crisis, which claimed 23 lives. Linda has counselled numerous other clients on crisis situations in a range of industries, including pharmaceutical, food and beverage, natural resources and agriculture.
Dr. Jeff Farber
Dr. Jeff Farber is currently employed as a Full Professor in the Department of Food Science at the University of Guelph, in Guelph, Ontario, where he is head of the Master’s Program in Food Safety and Quality Assurance (FSQA) and is also the Director of the Canadian Research Institute for Food Safety. He currently leads a team of about 10 researchers including graduate students, FSQA students, a post-doc and a research associate, who all do research on various aspects of microbial food safety.
Dr. Farber previously worked at Health Canada, most recently as Director of the Bureau of Microbial Hazards, in the Food Directorate of Health Canada, where he led a group of about 60 people working in the areas of food safety research, risk assessment, policy, risk management and risk communication. Dr. Farber has over 150 publications, plus numerous Book Chapters and has edited 4 books. He was Associate Editor of the International Journal of Food Microbiology for many years and has been on a number of Journal Editorial Boards.
Dr. Farber has been instrumental in advancing the development of policy approaches on emerging microbial food safety issues in Canada and at a global level. Dr. Farber is a Past-President of the International Association for Food Protection, and a member and Treasurer of the International Commission on Microbiological Specifications for Foods (ICMSF). He is also a member of the Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Working Group of the New York Academy of Sciences. Dr. Farber also has extensive experience working at the international level with organizations such as Codex Alimentarius, WHO and FAO.
